Discussions continue with Walmart and we now meet on a regular basis to update each other on developments.
The Abacus US team believes that we are in the strongest position to provide Walmart with a total retail lottery solution that meets all their requirements. The regular updates that Walmart request indicate their commitment to working with us and we believe it’s just a matter of time before a decision to move forward is made. We do know that like many huge organisations it comes down to IT priorities and through the pandemic there have been many obstacles to overcome. One of the biggest changes under way in stores today is the removal of the manned lanes and introduction of self-checkout. This is happening across their complete retail footprint and both NCR and Toshiba support this roll-out. Our next update is in November so watch this space.
Walmart have more than 5,355 outlets in the USA representing more than 107,100 POS tills of which 75,000 are manned lanes and 32,100 are self-service; they also have 408 stores in Canada with 8,160 POS tills all of which will become self-service by the end od 2022; and in Mexico they have 2,634 stores, with 41,000 POS tills of which 28,974 are manned and 12,026 are self-service.
